In a letter to the current Chief Justice of India (CJI), UU Lalit, the Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju asked him to recommend a successor for the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
On November 8, 2022, CJI Lalit will step down from his position. According to the seniority tradition, Justice DY Chandrachud, the supreme court’s senior judge after CJI Lalit, is anticipated to be considered for the position of CJI.
Prior to his resignation from office on November 10, 2024, Justice Chandrachud will have a lengthy stint at the head that will span more than two years. The Constitution’s Article 124(2) explains the selection procedure for the Chief Justice of India.
According to the same, the Union Law Minister must send a letter to the Chief Justice of India who is currently in office at the right period, which in practise is typically a month before they leave office.
