The Calcutta High Court has a working strength of 39 judges only out of sanctioned strength of 72 judges and 33 vacancies for judges position as on1st May 2022.
On Saturday the Center notified the appointment of three judicial officers as additional judges for the Calcutta High Court.
Accordingly, the official appointment letter following judicial officers have been elevated to the position of judges–
1.Ananya Bandyopadhyay
2.Rai Chattopadhyay and
3.Subhendu Samanta.
The Notification of the Central Government reads as follows:
“In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint (i) Ms. Ananya Bandyopadhyay, (ii) Smt. Rai Chattopadhyay and (iii) Shri Subhendu Samanta, to be Additional Judges of the Calcutta High Court, in that order of seniority, for a period of two years with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.”
The Supreme Court collegium had recommended the names of these in a meeting held on November 11, 2021.
