Recently, the Supreme Court posted to May 5, 2022, for a final hearing a batch of pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the offense of sedition u.s 124A of IPC.
The Bench of CJI NV Ramana was considering two pleas that were filed by Army veterans Major-General SG Vombatkere (Retd.) and Editors Guilds of India.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted that the Centre’s counter-affidavit is ready to be filed within two days.
After directing the Centre to file its affidavit within a week, the Bench posted the case to May 5 and clarified that a reply to the said affidavit should be filed by next Tuesday and further said that no adjournments will be granted.
Senior Counsel Sanjay Parikh mentioned the plea field by People Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) that was not listed.
Senior Counsel Vrinda Grover mentioned the plea field by journalists Anuradha Bhasin and Patricia Mukhim that was also not listed.
The Bench for all not listed petitions questioned if it was necessary to multiply the litigation on the same point of law. to which, Mr Parikh replied that he will assist Mr. Sibal and will not multiply the submissions.
With all these submissions in mind, the court posted the case on May 5.
