The appointment of two judicial officials as additional judges of the Bombay High Court has been announced by the Central Government.
The newly appointed judges are:
- Urmila Sachin Joshi-Phalke (who is presently the principal district judge at the City Civil and Sessions Court at Mumbai), and
- Bharat Pandurang Deshpande
In September 2021, the Supreme Court proposed their promotion to the High Court for the first time. The files had been returned by the central government, but the Collegium had renewed its proposal on February 1 of this year.
The Bombay High Court now has a strength of 55 judges, compared to a sanctioned strength of 94 with 39 vacancies as of June 1.
