The appointment of two lawyers as extra judges of the Calcutta High Court has been announced by the central government.
The two lawyers whose names have been cleared for appointment are:
– Raju Basu Chowdhury; and
– Lapita Banerji.
The Supreme Court Collegium first suggested their nominations in July of this year.
In September 2021, the Collegium reaffirmed the names.
The Calcutta High Court, which is supposed to have 72 judges, is currently operating with only 41.
