On Monday, two judicial officers were sworn in as judges of the Bombay High Court, bringing the total number of justices on the bench to 57.
The judges who took oath are:
- Urmila Sachin Joshi-Phalke; and
- Bharat Pandurang Deshpande.
In September 2021, the Supreme Court proposed their promotion to the High Court for the first time. The files had been returned by the central government, but the Collegium had renewed its proposal on February 1 of this year.
On June 3, the central government announced its appointment.
The number of vacancies in the Bombay High Court has decreased to 35 as a result of their appointment. The High Court is sanctioned to have a total of 94 members.
